New Member Alert!

Hey, my name is Miryam. I'm in my first semester here at Vanier and a new member of the Vanier First Aid Team! I joined this team because I'm very passionate about the medical field and I find that this is a fantastic opportunity to get a feel of what that entails. I haven't figured out which branch of medicine interests me the most, but I still have time for that. I believe it's very important to know basic first aid procedures; you never know when you might be in a situation where medical aid is required. For instance, did you know that CPR could buy a person some significant time until proper medical attention is given? So, be sure to sharpen up on those chest compressions!

Some first aid facts I know...

-When a person is having a seizure, make sure to position them on their side, and do NOT try to hold them down. Also, do NOT place anything in their mouth and make sure their airway is clear.

-When someone is experiencing a nose-bleed, they shouldn't tilt their head back. Instead, they should tilt their head forward and pinch their nose beneath the bone.

-When experiencing a sprained ankle, place a cold compress on the area rather than a hot compress. Heat will most likely cause inflammation and take longer for the sprain to heal.

-When someone is in need of CPR, prioritize chest compressions over mouth-to-mouth. Press hard in the middle of the chest. Your compressions should be around two inches deep and delivered at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute.

That's it for today, I hope you enjoyed these first aid facts. I look forward to providing insightful blogs in the near future.

Until next time!
