Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

One in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year. But five in five of us have mental health. (cmha.ca)

Mental health is a healthy state of mind. Oftentimes, physical health is prioritized over mental health. This is an issue because without mental soundness, we cannot have overall physical health.

Mental well-being impacts how we think, feel and act. It affects every aspect of our life. Mental health does not mean absence of mental illness. Thus, it is imperative that we pay attention to it.

Some characteristics of mental health are having a purpose, connecting with others, having meaningful relationships, and enjoying life. Being healthy mentally allows us to cope with stress adequately and be productive.

Having mental health problems could be caused by a number of things such as: genes or brain chemistry and trauma or abuse.

There are signs to help identify mental health issues. Some of which are:

  • eating too much or too little

  • sleeping too much or too little

  • having low energy

  • feeling numb

  • feeling confused, angry, worried or forgetful

  • causing harm to oneself or others.

Achieving mental health is an ongoing journey that should be applied in all situations and relationships.

If you know someone or think they might be struggling with their mental state, simply be there for them. Be ready to lend an ear when they need someone to talk to. More importantly, do not brush them off.

Raising Awareness

There are a number of ways to contribute to the awareness of mental soundness. Here are a few:

  • talk about it with everyone you are in contact with.

  • open up about any experiences you have had. (This will make people more comfortable to open up about their own experiences.)

  • educate yourself on the matter

  • coordinate an event dedicated to it

  • volunteer at organizations

  • inspire people on social media

  • encourage physical health because it goes hand in hand with mental health.

That's it for this post. I hope you enjoyed reading it.

Stay safe!
