Male Health and a Useful Catchline on How to Administer Epinephrine

You might be noticing more moustaches appearing this month on the faces of men...

What is Movember?

Movember, formerly known as November, is a month where men and women across the globe join together to raise awareness and funds for men’s prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

  • Trouble urinating

  • Decreased force in the stream of urine

  • Blood in semen

  • Discomfort in the pelvic area

  • Bone pain

  • Erectile dysfunction

Causes

Doctors still do not know what actually causes prostate cancer. However, they do know it begins when cells in the prostate become abnormal. Mutations in the abnormal cells DNA cause the cells to grow and divide more rapidly than normal cells do. The abnormal cells continue living, when other cells would die. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow to invade nearby tissue.

Risk Factors

-Age: The risk increases as you grow older.

-Race: Black man carry a greater risk prostate cancer than other people from different races.

-Family History: Your risk may increase if people in your family got prostate cancer.

-Obesity: Obese people may have a prostate cancer that is more difficult to treat.

Preventions

-Choose a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables.

-Choose healthy foods over supplements.

-Exercise most days of the week.

First Aid Anaphylaxis

What is it?

The word anaphylaxis represents a life-threatening allergic reaction. It can cause shock, a sudden drop in blood pressure and trouble breathing. In people who have an allergy, anaphylaxis can occur minutes after exposure to a specific allergy-causing substance.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Skin reactions, including hives, itching, and flushed or pale skin

  • Swelling of the face, eyes, lips or throat

  • Constriction of the airways, leading to wheezing and trouble breathing

  • A weak and rapid pulse

  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

  • Dizziness, fainting or unconsciousness

How to help

If you are with someone having an anaphylactic reaction please do the following:

  • Immediately call 911

  • Ask the person if he or she is carrying an epinephrine (EpiPen) to treat an allergic attack. If yes, ask if the person wants you to inject it for them. The saying goes, "Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh".

  • Have the person lie still on his or her back.

  • Loosen tight clothing and cover the person with a blanket. Don't give the person anything to drink.

  • If there's vomiting or bleeding from the mouth, turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking.

  • If there are no signs of breathing, coughing or movement, begin CPR. Do uninterrupted chest presses — about 100 every minute — until paramedics arrive.
