"Awareness safes lives"

Who is this new writer?

Hello readers!

My name is Rubiyat Rumel but I go by as Ruby. I am a health science student and I cannot be more excited to be part of the Vanier First Aid Team!

If I can describe myself in 3 words it would be: a cat lover, a foodie, and a skincare fanatic. (Technically is it more than 3 words, but you get the idea :p).

My dream job is to become a dermatologist because the amount of knowledge and debt fascinates me. The skin is our largest organ; therefore, taking care of it is as much important! It is a challenging branch, but my passion says otherwise.

Why did I join VFAT?

The answer is very simple. I am patient, caring and genuine person. Helping others is natural to me. Ever since I was young, I always made sure everyone around me is well and would be there to help anytime. Because learning is very important to me, joining the team will give me the opportunity to increase my knowledge to become a better health care provider for those in need. I believe being a first aid responder is an essential skill to have. Therefore, sharing facts and being cultured is a duty of mine. Life is unpredictable, create that confidence to care!

Few Facts about First Aid Care that I know

  • As obvious as it seems but keeping the person safe, make sure to move and guide away from any harm that may be.

  • Never put your head back when you have a nosebleed! Because it could cause flow down your throat and potentially go to your stomach which can cause vomiting and nausea. What to do is to tilt your head forward and pinch the nose on the nostrils and hold it for around 10 minutes then afterwards check if it stopped.

  • Do not just shout “call 911!!!”, make sure to address someone closest to you and ask them to call 911, give that person a duty.

  • Always apply a cold compress to combat any swelling like a sprained ankle and leave it for 10 minutes and then continue to apply cold as needed.

  • Try to stay calm as much as possible, a stressful situation can escalate down very easily.

That's it for now! Stay tuned for more post about first aid tips and facts! Let’s grow our knowledge together.

Hope you all liked reading my first post. Stay safe!
