An Introduction to First Aid and Myself

Hi everyone! My name is Elena Mammas and I'm a new member of the Vanier First Aid Team. I look forward to working with all of you and to be a part of this community!

A Few Things About Myself

I'm a second year student at Vanier College studying Health Sciences. On my free time, I enjoy running, reading, and spending time with my siblings. If I had to describe myself in three words, I would say that I'm ambitious, kind, and organized.

Why Did I Join the First Aid Team?

I decided that I wanted to join the First Aid Team because I want to learn more about healthcare. Throughout my first year of college, I've always wanted to join a club but I couldn't find one that I was really interested in, until I found out about the First Aid Team. Although I love my program, I wanted to do something that could take my mind off school when I feel stressed, but make me feel productive at the same time, which is why I think that being a part of the VFAT will be great for me. To add, in high school, I was a member of the swim team for two consecutive years. A lot of the members on the swim team were lifeguards and had taken their First Aid and CPR courses, which made me want to learn and practice First Aid. Therefore, being a part of this team is meant to be!

First Aid Facts

At any moment, someone around you can experience an injury or illness. By knowing First Aid skills, you can be able to stop the situation from getting worse.

Facts:

- For nose bleeds, instead of tilting your head back, it's better to lean your head forward and apply pressure on your nose.

- If you get a blister, it's better to leave the blister instead of breaking it.

- When you have a burn, you should put cold water on the area and apply an antibiotic ointment to decrease the risk of infection.

- For ankle sprains, there is a myth that you should apply a hot compress on the ankle. However, the fact is that you should actually apply a cold compress on it.

I hope you enjoyed my first post and that you're staying healthy during these difficult times. I look forward to writing more Blog posts this semester. Goodbye!
