About Me

Get to Know Me

Hey there! My name is Chavy Dworkind and this is my second year as a member of the Vanier First Aid Team and as a Health Science student. In my senior year of high school, I already had plans to apply to the first aid team at the college I would attend. Spending my time in the first aid room was the highlight of my campus days (pre-covid). As busy college students, we become easily entangled in our studies and we can forget the importance of volunteering our time to help others. I joined the first aid team in my first semester at Vanier so that helping others would be an integral part of my college life.

When I'm Not Studying...

In what little spare time I have, I enjoy playing piano, cooking & baking, jogging and doing muscle training workouts and catching up with my friends who I miss dearly (again, covid).

First Aid Mnemonics

The following are some interesting mnemonics I learned in my CPR and first aid training:

  1. Remember how to administer an EpiPen with the rhyme: blue to the sky orange to the thigh. The blue cap should be removed from the top of the EpiPen and the orange end should be firmly pushed into the outer thigh.

  2. Medically evaluate an individual using the acronym, SAMPLE .

S - Symptoms

A - Allergies

M - Medication

P - Past medical history

L - Last meal

E - Events

3. A third and very important mnemonic is related to the first three letters of the alphabet. If someone appears to be unable to breathe, remember your ABCs!

A - Airway: Check if the airway is blocked. If an object is visible at the back of the throat, try to remove it by sweeping the back of the throat with a finger. Make sure not to push the object further down.

B - Breathing: Is the person still unable to breathe? If so, proceed to C.

C - Circulation: Perform CPR! Keep the heart beating so that blood continues to circulate through the body until further help arrives.

Stay tuned and stay Safe!
